How to Get a Guy to Ask You to Homecoming

Ladies, we all know what it feels like to be head over heels for a guy who doesn’t seem to notice you very much. This is not your fault! Just because you’re not a cheerleader doesn’t mean he shouldn’t realize the two of you are meant to be. But you don’t have to be a cheerleader to turn his head. 1. Be bold! You don’t have to be the size of a stick or dress like a slut to get a guy to take notice. If you have two classes in a row with him, walk from one to the other with him. It’s a great, simple way to show him what a worthwhile person you are, with a built-in excuse to hang with him.

2. Laugh at his jokes. In fact, just build his confidence in general. Start slipping compliments in when you say hello. We all want to date someone who makes us feel good, so show him you’re that person! WARNING: Don’t be fake! Only laugh when it’s actually funny, and compliment things you genuinely like. He’ll be able to see right through it if you’re fudging, which is a huge turnoff.

3. Be yourself. All right, it’s a cliché, but people say it for a reason. If you act yourself around your friends and act another way around your crush, how will you act when you’re with all of them together? It’s much simpler if you just act normally – and everyone will be happier, too. Besides, you wouldn’t want to be on a date with someone who’s never met the real you, would you?

4. Drop hints. He’s just as unsure as you are, if not more so. Make sure he knows that you’re interested in more than friendship – drop some subtle hints when you have his attention, and maybe a couple stronger ones when you don’t. Pay attention to his reactions and draw the line before you start getting pushy.

5. Don’t be clingy. Yes, spending time with him is great, but odds are he probably won’t want to date a girl who won’t leave him alone. We all need time to ourselves, so make sure you don’t crowd him. It’s perfectly fine to let him know you missed him when you see him after a long time. Use your best judgment to decide how long “a long time” is.

6. Don’t be controlling. Acting like a guy’s mother is exactly the wrong thing to do to get him to see you in a romantic light. Be sure you don’t nag him about his hair or clothes, even if they’re bothering you. He didn’t get dressed in the morning hoping to be embarrassed – in fact, he could have been trying to look nice for you. How would you feel if he told you your hair didn’t look good and you should get it cut? Guys have feelings, too, even if they try to act macho.

Words of Caution: In addition to the warnings given in the list above, be sure to avoid the following tactics:

* Writing middle-school style notes to see if he wants to ask you to homecoming. (You know the ones we mean: “Do you want to take me to homecoming? Circle one: Yes, No, Maybe”)

* Begging and pleading to spend time with him. You’ll come off as clingy and immature. Instead, show him it’s fine by you if he does his own thing.

* Telling him what color your dress is and how cute it would be if his tie matched.

Do You Know What Shoes You’re Wearing to Prom?

When putting together your prom outfit, one of the most important things to consider is your shoes. They can complement or ruin the rest of your look, make your life painful or comfy, and cripple your wallet or have a minimal effect cash-wise. With so many different things to consider and so many options available to you, how will you ever choose the footwear that will grace your tootsies on prom night? The first thing to do is prioritize: what is the most important thing to you when it comes to shoes? Looks? Comfort? Price? There is the perfect pair of shoes out there for everyone.

Some general rules for everyone: The color of your dress should determine the color of shoes you wear. White, black, and silver are the most popular, since they go with just about everything. Sparkles are good in moderate amounts, but you don’t want to take too much attention away from your face and your dress. As far as styles go, straps are always cute. Peep-toes are, too – but make sure you don’t wear hose with them and that you wear pretty toenail polish as well! Make sure your shoes are in decent condition and won’t fall apart or anything.

If you’re after looks, heels are what you’ll need. Taller girls should probably get small to moderate-height heels – your date probably won’t appreciate you towering over him. For a floor-length dress, moderate height is probably the best way to go so your dress doesn’t end a foot above the floor. If your dress is short, heel height doesn’t really matter in that respect.

For those of you who are more comfort-oriented, don’t get stilettos – particularly if you’re not used to wearing them. If you want to wear heels, thicker and shorter ones are more comfortable. This doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice looks, if that’s also important to you; there are plenty of cute non-stiletto heels out there. It’s probably a good idea to get a pair of shoes that have some kind of strap over the heel, which will hold them on your feet more effectively. If you don’t want to go with heels, flats are another great option! Ballet flats are very “in” right now, and a fancier pair will look fabulous with your dress. Plus, they will be very easy to dance in. However, if you decide to wear flats, make sure your dress won’t drag on the floor. Get it hemmed if need be.

As for you thrifty shoppers, the main thing for you is to shop either very early or very late, as that’s when the sales will be! If you really want to get a jump on things, look for shoes right after the prom or the homecoming the year before yours, when everything will be on a huge sale. Another great way to save, of course, is to just use a pair of shoes you already have. It’s virtually guaranteed that no one will notice, and other girls are less likely to have the same ones. If you’re really hardcore about saving some cash, try thrift stores first.

So you’re going to prom this year. Finally, that night you’ve been waiting for throughout your high school career, probably second only to graduation! But now that it’s finally approaching, how are you going to prepare for the big night? What will be there when you walk in? We’ll walk you through the typical prom experience.

Music

A dance wouldn’t be a dance without music, right? Obviously they’ll have the latest dance tunes pumping through the highest quality speakers the student government can rustle up. They’ll probably mix in a few classics too, like the Cha-cha Slide and maybe even the Macarena. You might want to brush up on the steps for these popular dances and more recent ones like the Cupid Shuffle. If you’ve been to a formal dance before, you know that dancing in heels isn’t always easy and it can be painful by the end of the night. To avoid this, it would be advisable to do one of a few options: (1) Wear the gorgeous pumps you bought for the occasion, but take them off when it’s time to get your boogie on; (2) Wear or bring cute flats and dance in those – that way, you won’t step in any spilled punch with your bare feet; (3) Make sure the heels you wear are both pretty and functional – thicker-heeled shoes make it easier to balance, reducing the chances of you falling on your face but still allowing you to look stunning. Plus, you can always take them off if they get uncomfortable.

Refreshments

Most high school proms will provide refreshments, even if they weren’t available at other dances. There will almost certainly be sodas, and probably also snack food like chips, veggie and fruit trays, cookies, etc. If your school wants to get fancy, they could furnish more substantial fare like sandwiches, and possibly a nice dessert like a chocolate fountain. At any formal occasion, food seems to be magnetically attracted to your beautiful (not to mention pricey) attire. BE CAREFUL not to spill! It sounds obvious, but when you’re holding something liquid or goopy, pay attention to what your hands and mouth are doing. If napkins are provided, as they should be, you could even take it a step further and spread one or two over your lap if you sit to eat. You can easily avoid embarrassment and skip a trip to the dry cleaners’ by watching where you put your food. If you spill something on your dress, you’ll spend time being self-conscious rather than having fun – not the ideal way to dance the night away.

What to Bring

An essential part of your prom outfit is accessories, which includes a bag or clutch of some kind. This is necessary because you’ll need a place to put the few necessities you bring. But what are those necessities? First of all, your ticket to the dance is pretty important. You’ll also need room for your car keys and driver’s license, if you’re driving. A bit of cash, just in case, is probably a good idea. Mints (for the slow dances!) and lip gloss, mascara, and eyeliner for bathroom touch-ups are also a great idea, so you’ll keep looking great all night. A travel-size stick of deodorant might not be a bad idea, either. A camera is a fabulous idea, so you can take pictures of your crew having a great time. Finally, a few bobby pins could come in handy in case your hair comes a little loose after some lively dancing.

We all have our favorite colors. You might even plan on wearing a prom dress of that color. But something you may not know is that colors send subliminal messages to everyone that sees them. So before you rush out and buy that dress you’ve had your eye on, you might want to consider the impression your color will be giving, and whether that’s the message you want to send on your big night.

Red
This popular and bright color is inherently energizing and stimulating. The amount of brightness affects how exciting it is: a blazing red will be more energizing than a subtle maroon. Red is also known as the color of confidence, and it can provide a sense of protection from anxiety. If you want all eyes on you, red is a good way to go.

Orange
Many people seem to have a love-hate relationship with orange. Being a close relative of red, it sends many of the same messages. Like red, orange stimulates activity. It also encourages socialization – depending on the hue you choose, an orange dress may make you appear more approachable. Bright shades of orange inspire a sense of energy and fun. In spite of the polarizing effect of orange, some shades of this color are widely popular: for example, rust, peach, and terra cotta appeal to many people. Yellow

Green

Blue

Blues like this exhilarate – great for a dance! If you want to look and feel mature and calm, though, a deeper or darker blue may be the color for you.

Purple
In the spectrum, purple is the combination of red and blue. This joint effort carries over to the impressions purple gives: it combines red’s confident energy with blue’s calm. Purple is traditionally the color of royalty and mysticism, but it is relevant in today’s society as an uplifting, calming color that encourages creativity. If you’re the gal with all the crazy dance moves that nobody else could come up with, maybe you should get a purple dress!

Pink
Pink is one of the most feminine colors out there. It exudes a soft and gentle feeling, and its brighter shades are frequently seen as sensual and passionate, as well as energetic (a property borrowed from the parent shade of red). Softer pinks are often associated with romance. So if you’re feeling romantic for prom, a blushing pink hue may be the way to go.

Brown
This down-to-earth color represents stability, reliability, and order. It also makes a person seem more approachable and supplies a feeling of wholesomeness. Wear a brown prom dress if you want to feel one with the crowd, yet stand out as a pillar of trustworthiness and general goodness.

Gray/Silver
These colors are seen as wise and classic, as well as sleek and refined. It is considered the perfect neutral, and is therefore known as the color of compromise. A silver or gray prom dress will transpose these properties to you, and you’ll come off as classy and sophisticated.

Black
Black is commonly seen as the color of authority. It, like gray and silver, conveys a sense of sophistication, which also makes the wearer seem more sophisticated. How To Ask a Guy to Prom

Prom is your night. Chances are, you've thought a lot about the person with whom you'd like to share that night. Once you've chosen a viable candidate, don't wait around for him to pop the question. Instead, do the modern thing and take matters into your own hands.... and ask him yourself!

A little mental and strategic preparation can go a long way to making the "asking" experience a lot easier.

1. Choose a date.
Before you ask someone to prom, you need to choose who that special person. First of all, don't necessarily plan to ask the hottest guy you know. Even if you land a smokin' hot guy for your date, you're not guaranteed to have a great time at the dance. In fact, you'll probably have a horrible time. Consider asking a friend or another guy you love spending time with, even if you're not romantically interested.
2. Know his plans
Don't embarrass yourself of learning a guy is going with somebody else by finding out what his plans are before you ask him. Maybe he'll be out of town on prom night, or maybe another girl asked him while you were busy daydreaming about how you were going to ask him. If you can casually find out if he already has plans for the night, (maybe talk to his friends about it).

3. Practice.
Feeling scared? Don't worry about it! Dudes are honored when a girl asks them to a dance. Below are some steps in getting yourself ready:

a. Prepare yourself and your date.
If you don't know your date that well (or even if you do), catch his attention by flirting actively for a few days right before you ask him to the prom. Initiating interactions between the two of you is also a great idea because then it won't be a total surprise when you ask. Making efforts like these to spend time with your date will help build your confidence, too.

b. Get the guy alone.
Catch the guy you're planning to ask one-on-one. Even if you're pretty sure he'll say yes, it puts a lot of pressure on a guy when you ask him to prom in front of half the school. It shows consideration if you make sure he's alone, and it may also take some of the pressure off you.

c. Give him time.
Especially if you don't know the guy very well, give him some time to think over your offer. If you don't make him feel like he has to answer right away, he'll get the impression that you're casual about the asking (which is a good thing) and that you won't be crushed to pieces if he says no.

d. Respond, letting the guy's response lead your own.
If he seems psyched when he says yes to you, feel free to express your excitement, too. Otherwise, act casually, and don't go overboard. Always show a sense of humor if you can, and be sure to tell the guy you're happy you're going with him.

If he says no, you'll probably feel disappointed, but do your best to remain casual and upbeat. Smile, say "thanks anyway," and move on. Don't dwell on it! Stay friendly, and ask a guy who can actually appreciate you.

A Sweet Invitation
Encase your handwritten invitation in foil, then bake it into a cake. If the way to a man's heart truly is through his stomach, then he can't say no! Just hope he doesn't bite into the foil and get cancer.
Sporty Fun
If the guy you're asking likes sports, incorporate his favorite sport in your invitation by attaching it to a piece of sports equipment. You could also think about asking his teammates to help you coordinate your invitation to happen during one of their practices. Honestly, this this is a stupid idea. Don't do it.

No Choice
You'll need the permission of your date's parents for this one. With the help of your friends, lug a gigantic boulder to your date's driveway. Chalk the driveway with the words, "Will you go to prom with me? Bring your answer tomorrow!" and sign your name. Write "NO" on the giant boulder, then find a tiny pebble and attach it to a piece of paper that says "YES." Your date won't have much of a choice unless he owns a dump truck to haul the boulder back! Only do this if you are a psychopath.

Tips

1. If you still want to ask a guy you don’t know too well, use a low-risk method. Don't expend a lot of time and effort doing something dramatic, and don't force the guy to answer on the spot or in public.

2. Don't be scared of just coming right out and asking. A guy who isn't into the whole "romance" thing will appreciate your directness and will be more willing to accept your offer.

3. Ask early unless you're sure the guy is going to say yes. The earlier you ask, the better the chance he doesn’t already have a date. Also, the sooner you can ask another person if he says no.

4. Pretend to be confident. Obviously, since you're reading this, you're not confident. However, if you can fake it, you may have a better shot at landing a date.

5. Use your friends. They'll help you practice, boost your confidence, and console you if the guy you ask says no.

6. Don't over analyze a rejection. If a guy says no, it doesn't mean anything except that he won't go to that particular dance with you. Don't read into it, and above all, don't make yourself feel bad about it. He's probably gay, anyway.

7. And most importantly: NEVER have a friend ask for you. It's not respectful to the guy you're asking, and it won't make you appear confident and in control of the situation. You will be rejected like nobody's business. Trust me.

Are you ready for prom? Do you have your dress hanging in your closet, your shoes safely in their box, and an appointment to get your hair done? These things are all great, and of course they are crucial to looking your best on your big night. But they aren’t everything. Do you know which necklace, earrings, and/or bracelet you’re going to wear as you dance the night away? If not, you’ve still got some planning to do. No doubt you’ve had plenty of practice picking accessories for past occasions or just for everyday wear, but here are some simple tips- with these, you can’t go wrong!

· Flip through magazines and browse a variety of stores to find the look you want. Often, even if something is expensive in one place or by one designer, you can get a similar piece somewhere else for much less money.

· The classics are classic for a reason. Pearls and delicate silver or gold chain necklaces and bracelets always look nice, and they work with pretty much any color dress!

· Silver goes with just about anything, as long it’s the right shade: red, pink, green, blue, and purple all look great with silver jewelry, as do white and black dresses. Gold works best with darker, warmer greens and with black. However, the best way to judge whether gold or silver would be a good fit for your dress is to hold put them each on while wearing the dress and compare.

· Colored accessories also look great, especially with a black, white, or gray gown. They will help make your outfit more festive – after all, you’re going to a celebration!

No prom outfit is complete without the right corsage (for ladies, worn on an elastic band that goes around the wrist) or boutonnière (for guys, worn pinned to the lapel). Traditionally, the flowers in both match the color of the girl’s dress. Corsages and boutonnières can consist of almost any kind of flower you want, though roses and carnations are probably the most common ones. It is also tradition for the girl to buy the guy’s boutonnière and the guy to buy the girl’s corsage, and present each other with them before leaving for prom.
If you don’t want your escort to see your dress before the big night so you can surprise him, you’ll need to describe the color of your dress so he can match it with the corsage he’ll get you. It’s a good idea to give him a swatch of fabric from your dress, if possible, so he’ll have an easier time matching the colors of the flowers and the dress.

A lot of times, instead of getting flowers to match the colors of your dress, dates will just buy white flowers for each other instead. 4. Decide on a time and location for pickup. When you call the company to make your reservation, they’ll probably want to know when and where to pick up you and your crew. Decide this with everyone beforehand to make sure they know and agree with the plan. If some people in the group don’t have rides to the agreed-upon location, make sure the limo can pick them up on the way. Also make sure you have a street address for the pickup location.

5. Be on time! When the big day comes, make sure everyone arrives at the pickup location a bit early, just to be sure. You won’t want to be late to your dinner reservations!

Bonus: Bring extra cash (at least $15 per person) in order to tip the driver. Often, the driver will stop the limo ride halfway and wait for you to tip!!

Planning beforehand can ensure you of a magical prom night with few or no unforeseen problems or last-minute hassles. After all, the only things you want to think about on the day and night of your prom are how beautiful you look and how much fun you’re having, right?? Follow the timeline below for guaranteed prom perfection:

One to three months in advance: (That would be about now)
• Start looking at fashion magazines and stores for the look you want.
• Begin shopping for your prom dress, shoes, and purse.
• Once you have chosen your dress, be sure to schedule any necessary alterations.

One month before:
• Once you buy your dress, shoes, and purse, do a trial run on the entire look to make sure you like it and won’t be disappointed on prom day.
• Begin shopping for (or borrowing) the jewelry to complete your look.
• If you are having your hair or makeup done professionally for the big day, schedule appointments at the salon. Be sure not to schedule anything too late in the afternoon so you have plenty of time to get dressed and ready.
• If you are doing your hair and/or makeup yourself, begin collecting ideas for hairstyles and shopping for makeup shades to match your dress.

Two weeks before:
• Call or visit a florist to order a boutonniere for your date that complements your dress; remind your date to order a corsage for you.

One week before:
• Try your dress on one more time with your shoes and jewelry.
• Walk around your house a little (including up and down stairs) for a quick comfort check on the dress and shoes.
• If possible, have a friend take a couple of pictures of you from different angles to see if your outfit is working.
• Buy stockings and/or any other small items you may need to complete your prom outfit.
• Shop for the perfect lip and nail colors to complement your dress.
• Call to confirm your hair and makeup appointments.

One day before:
• Check that you have film or batteries for your camera. You will definitely want to capture some images of you and your friends on the big night.
• If you are doing your hair and makeup yourself, do a trial run on your chosen style to catch any problems that may come up and to time the process.
• Pick up your date’s boutonniere from the florist.
• Prepare your purse the night before to make sure you have everything you will need. You should definitely have breath mints, extra lip color and gloss, perfume, an all-in-one makeup compact for minor touch-ups, a bit of extra cash, and a cell phone.

Prom day:
• Use a pore-refining mask in the morning so your skin looks and feels fresh.
• Try to do a little bit of exercise (not too much cardio) in the morning so you feel limber and slim.
• If you are going to a beauty salon, be sure to arrive on time and wear a shirt that comes off easily so you will not ruin your hair or makeup when you are getting dressed.
